Case studyStudent media & live production

A student crew. A four-camera live broadcast.

Major events at Berkley used to be filmed on a single iPad. I led the build of a four-camera live setup and trained the students who run it. I lead the programme and the systems; the students make the shows.

The purpose

Real shows. Real audiences.

A student television programme puts storytelling, production and teamwork into work people will watch. That audience gives students a reason to finish what they start.

I have set up student television programmes at three schools: ESTV, SFTV and Berkley TV. I now lead Berkley TV at Berkley Normal Middle School, where my title is Media Specialist Teacher.

My contribution

I build the system. Students run the show.

At Berkley I lead the programme and its production setup, and train students to take charge of real broadcasts.

At ESTV (SJI International, Singapore) I ran the programme end to end: teaching, production standards, budgets and publishing. I designed and project-managed the new studio and made promotional video with the school’s Advancement and Communications Office.

Students led the creative work. During my 2016–2022 tenure, the SJI International YouTube channel grew eightfold, from 200 to 1,600 subscribers.

Live production

From one iPad to four cameras.

When I arrived, major events were being captured on a single iPad. I led the build of a four-camera live setup for our Final Assembly, running on vMix, NDI and wireless video.

Running new HDMI and power cabling to the far side of the space came back with a hefty quote. I engineered a Hollyland wireless video setup instead. It solved the problem within the existing budget.

A nine-student crew ran every role: a technical director calling the show, a vision mixer on the console, four camera operators on the floor and a three-person support team on logistics. I led the programme and set the standards; they delivered the live show.

The student vision mixer built the vMix show file from scratch: NDI inputs, audio routing, multiview overlays, graphics shortcuts and triggers, and the live transitions.

Featured work

A school day, through students’ eyes.

The featured film, A Day in My Life at Berkley Normal Middle School, was published by Berkley TV. Under my leadership the channel has grown sevenfold, from 200 to 1,410 subscribers as of September 2026, and Berkley TV won the New Zealand Blue Light 2024 National Film Festival.

My own production work covers motion graphics, promotional video, music video and live shows, including What is Capital E?

What I’d bring

I choose the kit, work to the budget and train the crew.

For your organisation, that means live streams and video built around the budget you have: a practical technical setup, a crew trained to run it and production standards that hold up on the day. When the cabling quote for our Final Assembly came in high, I found a wireless answer that fit the budget. That is the judgement I bring to kit decisions.

I have done this at scale. At Capital E SoundHouseNZ/MediaLab I designed and ran game design, animation, music production and movie-making programmes for more than 5,000 students a year from around the world, with sell-outs in all four areas.

My apps are also used daily in the school’s classrooms and by Berkley TV for filming and media production.

In a senior role, I’d set up and lead your media production. On a project, I’d scope the kit, run the build and hand over a trained crew.
